What is the difference between Laser diode & Laser Module? Strictly speaking, they are not completely different things which are absolute opposite. Laser diode can be regarded as the heart of laser module. Well, they do serve different purposes in various applications.


First, let's check the definition of them:

A laser diode, (LD), or diode laser, essentially, is a semiconductor diode where a diode-pumped directly with electrical current can create lasing conditions at the diode's junction. They can directly convert electrical energy into light. Driven by voltage, the doped p-n-transition allows for the recombination of an electron with a hole. Due to the drop of the electron from a higher energy level to a lower one, radiation, in the form of an emitted photon is generated. This is a spontaneous emission. Stimulated emission can be produced when the process is continued and further generate light with the same phase, coherence, and wavelength. Laser diodes include single heterojunction (SH), double heterojunction (DH), and quantum well (QW) laser diodes.


Laser Diode Module ( here refer to laser diode module ) is a kind of device which uses certain semiconductor material as working material to produce laser. It includes Laser diode, some optic, cooling device, and some possible electrical elements, etc.


As for the difference, generally speaking, laser diode is a device which produces or generates laser, like a source, while laser module is a device that emits laser. The laser diode needs to be installed into the laser module in order to emit laser. For appearance, laser modules more alike a full device, while laser diode is like a small electronic component with different packaging forms, including to package, butterfly package, 14 pins. In essence, laser diode is a semiconductor device, and the laser can be a gas laser, a liquid laser or a solid-state laser. Besides the laser diode, a laser module also includes:
