What are the reasons for semiconductor laser degradation?

Nov 27, 2020

The semiconductor laser itself is relatively fragile. At present, the life of the laser can be as long as 100,000 hours, and the life of the fiber laser is short. So what is the reason for the degradation of the laser during operation?

1. The semiconductor laser has a small die, high working current density and high optical power density. The semiconductor single crystal material as a laser material is more prone to defects. These defects gradually develop under the action of electricity and light, thereby causing the degradation of device performance.

2. The mirror surface of the semiconductor laser is formed by a cleavage process, and the mirror surface itself is affected by environmental conditions and pollution will also cause the performance of the laser to degrade.

3. Die soldering is also a key technology. The die is soldered on the heat sink, and the active distance is only a few micrometers away from the heat sink; the semiconductor laser will generate heat when working, and if the solder is too much, it will slowly climb when heated, causing The semiconductor laser is short-circuited, resulting in laser degradation.

4. With the extension of working time, the threshold current of the laser will slowly increase, which will lead to the degradation of the laser.
