Lidar is a laser detection and ranging system LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), which is a radar system that detects the position and speed of a target by emitting a laser beam.


Laser is the core of lidar. It uses laser as emitting light source and adopts active remote sensing equipment with photoelectric detection technology. Lidar is an advanced detection method that combines laser technology and modern photoelectric detection technology. A lidar instrument principally consists of a laser, a scanner, and a specialized GPS receiver.

How Does Lidar Work?

A typical lidar sensor emits pulsed light waves into the surrounding environment. These pulses bounce off surrounding objects and return to the sensor. The sensor uses the time it took for each pulse to return to the sensor to calculate the distance it traveled.
